I was reading about the muscles of the spine and it mentioned that the transverse abdominis is not involved in any joint action.  That being so, how is it exercised?confuse

Terry, good evening I hope you are well and having a great end to your day.  With regard to your question, consider the following.  As you are learning, the TVA or transverse abdominis is the chief muscle of forced expiration. Along with the other abdominal muscles the transverse abdominis is also involved in helping to hold the abdomen flat. You can work the muscle by executing a vacuum like action by drawing the abdominal contents back toward the spine while simultaneously expiring. You can stretch the transverse abdominis through the opposite action of maximal inspiration.

We hope this helps.  Take care and have a great night.
