I just finished module 4 and thought I fully understood risk stratification until I took the test. I understand where I got confused but I would like to try another case study to make sure I can evaluate a case study properly. I hope you can toss me one or two to work on. Namaste, karenymca
John is 38 yrs old, 5'10" and weighs 240 lbs. He is a social smoker and drinker. John works as an IT tech and rarely can find time to exercise. He just had his yearly physical and although his total cholesterol is great at 172, his doctor has started him on medication to reduce his blood pressure. John's dad had a heart attack at 59 but his mom is in great health at 68. John would like to lose 50 lbs and get back to his college weight!
Thanks for your help. I got this.... Risk - 4 or 5 1. Obese BMI - 34.42 2. Smoker 3. Sedentary 4. Hypertension 5. Father heart attack BUT is 55 the cut off age or is 59 close enough to count as a risk?
Moderate Risk
Yes, I would want a physician's clearance before going further.
As far as the father's age, no it would not be a risk factor because he was over 55.
Really great work!!!!!
Try this one.

How many risk factors for CHD does John have?
Is he Low, Moderate, or High risk?
Does he need a physician's clearance?

Thank you soo much for your help. I have another question....
I took Module 6 test and passed BUT found confused on question 4.... The recommended exercise energy expenditure is ____ kcals per day.
I wanted more info... it was hard for me to answer cause I wanted to know for who...male or female, weight management or weight loss, etc type of info. I was nervous as I used process of elimination and luckily got it right on the third try.
Could you please explain this question to me more so I do not get it wrong in future tests. I saw the grid showing the basic expenditures, the least was 150 and the most was 439 kcals. But it was per exercise and the question said per day....any additional ADL that would also go into energy expenditure could increase that significantly. I do not want to over think this so any type of help would be awesome! Namaste, karen
According to your text on page 116, the ACSM recommends a daily caloric expenditure of 150-400 kcals from physical activity and/ or 1000 kcals per week. To achieve optimal weight control the ACSM recommends a weekly expenditure of 2000 kcals per week.
The question was specifically referring to the guidelines set forth by the ACSM.
Hope that helps!
Ryan
