I teach 2-3 classes a week to the senior population at our gym so this topic was of interest to me.  One of the guidelines stated a 40% HRR of intensity but to use the RPE chart instead of the 220-age formula.  So how will they know what 40% is unless we calculate a 10 second heartrate reading?

We use a RPE chart in class and I have heard some members say they don't understand the chart-dont' know what # they are) while others know exactly where they are working.  I think the person who doesn't know their number must not be working that hard? And I guess I need to take more time to explain what the numbers mean(which our chart has great statements beside each number that explain how you should be feeling).

Yes, you are correct.  It is going to be better to use the RPE chart with this specific population.  40-85% of HRR correlates to 12-16 on the Borg RPE scale.

If your class participants are confused by the actual numbers, try using the words associated with those numbers.  For instance, if you want your clients to stay at 40% of their HRR, ask them to exercise at a level just below a feeling of "somewhat hard", as "somewhat hard" correlates with 13 on the scale.
